BIOGRAPHY

Erica Redmond is a visual artist specialising in printmaking and lens based media. As a recent graduate of Limerick School of Art and Design she is currently based in Limerick City. She documents the everyday around her to further understand her surroundings and notice these overlooked sites we've all been accustomed to seeing day in, day out.

Her Graduate Project: ‘Cornered Sites’ looks at a hyper-sensitivity to natural elements like light and wind in Erica’s day to day surroundings. The documentative approach encapsulates the sublime properties of these elements and the subtle changes within revisited still and moving images.

The project began using a controlled approach regarding the frame, the motion it was documented in and the objects used. During extended lockdowns Erica relinquished control and worked towards a more intuitive method. It became more about the uncontained, natural elemental forces, and how they interact with key motifs such as the chiffon curtain. It gradually transitioned from solely showing the sublime, tonality of light on reflective surfaces, to documenting the fury of the wind on semi-permanent structures.

Light remains a vital element in ‘Cornered Sites’ but it needed to adapt with the changing seasons. Artificial light prominently presents itself behind the dancing washing pegs and pink curtain all at the mercy of the elements at that present moment.

The work successfully shows the permanency of her surroundings in unsure and strange times. It is developed from theories of ‘Dérive’ by Guy Debord, archival methods of collating imagery from Paul Winstanley, the writings of movement and the ideologies of human presence and absence by Saul Leiter.
